GOLETA, Calif. – It was a picture-perfect day at Sandpiper Golf Club for the first round of the 9th Founders Cup. Clear skies, calm winds and temperatures that reached 70 degrees greeted players at the coastal setting of Goleta, CA.
Greg Sanders, of Anthem, AZ, leads the Senior Division by one stroke over newcomer William Smith, of Newville, PA, and hometown hopeful Bobby Schaeffer, of Santa Barbara. Sanders posted the low round of the day with a two-under par round of 70, which featured four birdies against two bogeys.
In the Super Senior Division, David Nelson, of Littleton, CO, posted even par 72 and leads by a stroke over a group of three challengers including local John Pate, of Santa Barbara, Gregory Goode, of Salina, KS, and Donny Phillips, of Suwanee, GA.
Dan Parkinson, of Lehi, Utah, made six birdies against five bogeys and leads the Legend Division after a roller-coaster round of one-under par 71. Evan Long, of Charlotte, NC, and Jody Vasquez, of La Quinta, CA, are tied for second at four strokes back.
Finally in the Super Legend Division, Gaylord Davis, of Portland, OR, and Michael Mahoney, of La Jolla, CA, are tied at even par. Merced, CA resident Robbie Thompson is in third place after his round of three-over 75
