RESULTS: 69th U.S. Senior Amateur Championship
OOLTEWAH, Tenn. – Congratulations to Matt Sughrue on yet another deep run into the match play bracket at the U.S. Senior Amateur Championship. In the morning Quarterfinals, Sughrue carded an impressive five birdies en route to victory over Mark Knecht, 2 & 1. In his afternoon Semifinal match, Sughrue ran into Daniel Sullivan, of Pasadena, Calif., who had just taken down Canada’s Dave Bunker. Sughrue got off to a slow start going 4down through six holes and just couldn’t battle back against the solid play from his opponent, with Sullivan prevailing 6 & 5.
Playing in his 14th USGA event and first U.S. Senior Amateur, Sullivan was the equivalent of 4-under par on Wednesday, 2-under in each match. Sullivan has enjoyed a stellar season that includes runner-up finishes at both the George C. Thomas Invitational at Los Angeles Country Club, and the Lupton Memorial (Senior), which is hosted annually at The Honors Course.
Playing in his 23rd USGA Championship and 8th U.S. Senior Amateur, Sughrue was runner-up to Dave Ryan in 2016, and has reached the quarterfinals four times. His career mark in match play at the U.S. Senior Amateur is now an impressive 18-8.
