RESULTS: 69th U.S. Senior Amateur Championship

OOLTEWAH, Tenn. – The round of 64 is in the books at the 69th U. S. Senior Amateur Championship at The Honors Club in Ooltewah, Tennessee.  Congratulations to Paul Simson on an incredible run in this event.  Simson, 73, qualified as the No. 8 seed after contending for medalist honors as the oldest player in the field.  Simson’s career mark in match play is now 36-13, quite a mark set by the two-time U.S. Senior Amateur champion!

Members who have moved on to the Round of 32:

Matt Sughrue (Arlington, Va.) – Sughrue played steady golf and posted three birdies in defeating Maxwell Fain.  Sughrue will face Bryan Norton in the next round.

Joe Palmer (Norwalk, Iowa) – Palmer overcame an early three-hole deficit to knock out past champion Jeff Wilson, 2 & 1.  Palmer now goes against Paul Smith in the Round of 32 on Tuesday.

Jack Hall (Savannah, Ga.) – Hall jokingly noted that he missed two meals during his 25-hole marathon victory over Mike Henry.  In extra holes, the two players matched pars until Henry finally blinked and Hall’s par on the 25th secured the win.  Hall will face Louis Brown on Tuesday morning.

Chip Lutz (Jupiter, Fla.) – Lutz played stellar bogey-free golf on his way to a 5 & 4 victory over Joe Sawaia.  Lutz will look to keep that momentum going in his round of 32 match against Robert Nelson.

Rick Cloninger (Rock Hill, S.C.) – Cloninger was victorious 4 & 3 over fellow-member Greg Sanders.  Cloninger was the equivalent of one-under par at the end of the match and will face another fellow-member Rick Stimmel on Tuesday morning.

Randy Haag (Orinda, Calif.) – Haag defeated Ronnie Clark of Scotland, 3 & 2, in a match where he trailed early, but took control after seven holes.  Haag closed out the match with a pair of deuces on the par three holes No. 14 and No. 16.  He will now face Bob Royak in a heavyweight Round of 32 matchup.

Roger Newsom (Virginia Beach, Va.) – The co-medalist never trailed in his match against Brian Ferris, closing it out 3 & 2.  Newsom will square off against John Adams in the Round of 32.

Gene Elliott (Norwalk, Iowa) – In what could be considered the match of the day, Elliott went 21 holes with Jerry Gunthorpe, the man he defeated in the final three years ago to win the U.S. Senior Amateur at CC of Detroit.  Ironically, just like their match three years ago, Elliott never led in the match until the deciding hole.  Elliott will face Tim Dunlavey on Tuesday morning.

Rick Stimmel (Pittsburgh, Pa.) – Stimmel sprinted out to a quick lead on Jack Larkin, Sr., but Larkin would not go away quietly.  The lead was down to just one with four holes to play before Stimmel won holes 15 and 16 to close out the match.  Stimmel will face another fellow-member Rick Cloninger in the Round of 32.

Congratulations to all of our members who qualified for the 69th U. S. Senior Amateur Championship and best of luck to those advancing through the bracket.  We’ll be rooting you on!
